Assistive Technology in Art Education

Although students with disabilities may experience many "cannots", taking an art class does not have to be one of them!

There are many challenges that do face art education teachers when teaching students with disabilities.  Some of these challenges are:

  • Sensory issues
  • Gross motor delays
  • Fine motor delays
  • Cognitive delays
After taking into account these issues and delays, art projects can be a fun learning experience as well as therapeutic for students with disabilities.

Below is a link to a forum where a teacher asked for assistance in teaching a class to children with special needs.  There are several fellow teachers offering advice as well as links to projects and lesson plans:

Beyond the Book

There are so many Web 2.0 Tools out on the internet for a student to use to tap into their creativity to express themselves!

Please look to the left of this webpage for the links.  There are 2 videos where you will be instructed on a very cool art project!  The three other links are web programs that you can create an art project.  Remember - art projects are ways of expressing yourself.  Art is not just painting and coloring!

I have verified they are safe for students to use.

Learning can be fun!  Students need to express themselves!
